RBI Repo Rate Hike: Will Your EMI Rise?

63 viewsThe Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50%, marking its first rate hike in nearly four years. The RBI also shifted its policy stance from “neutral” to “calibrated tightening”, signalling greater focus on inflation risks.
For borrowers, the immediate question is simple: Will EMIs become more expensive? The answer depends on the type of loan. Home loans and other floating-rate loans linked to external benchmarks can become costlier when the repo rate rises. Banks may increase lending rates, which can either raise the EMI or extend the repayment period, depending on how the lender adjusts the loan.
The impact, however, may not be identical for every borrower. Existing fixed-rate loans generally aren't directly affected by a repo-rate change, while floating-rate borrowers may see changes when their lender's benchmark resets. New borrowers could also face higher borrowing costs if banks pass on the increase. At the same time, higher interest rates can benefit some savers through potentially better deposit returns.
Why did the RBI act now? Inflation has been rising, with August consumer inflation at 4.82%, while higher crude-oil prices and global uncertainty are adding further pressure. Despite this, the RBI expects India's economy to remain strong, raising its FY27 growth forecast to 7.1%.
So, your EMI may rise—but not necessarily immediately or by the same amount for everyone. The actual impact will depend on your lender, loan type, outstanding balance and interest-rate reset terms.
