44 viewsDelhi witnessed heightened political tension on October 12 as opposition parties prepared to march towards the Supreme Court over alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls. Led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the INDIA bloc demanded a halt to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The opposition has alleged that the voter-list revision could unfairly exclude eligible citizens and undermine electoral fairness. The Election Commission, however, has defended the process, maintaining that the exercise is intended to update voter records and that people whose names were wrongly deleted can seek re-enrolment. These competing claims have intensified the political debate over the transparency of India’s electoral system.
The planned march faced a major hurdle when Chief Justice of India Surya Kant declined the opposition leaders’ request for a meeting. He indicated that concerns about matters already before the court should be pursued through proper legal proceedings. The Chief Justice also stressed that protests must remain peaceful and must not obstruct the functioning of the Supreme Court or the movement of lawyers, staff and litigants.
Security was tightened across central Delhi ahead of the demonstrations. Authorities closed six metro stations until 4 pm and announced traffic restrictions in several areas. The measures affected commuters as the political confrontation continued.
The controversy raises important questions about electoral transparency, accountability and the right to peaceful protest. Ultimately, allegations of voter exclusion must be examined through evidence and lawful procedures, while authorities must ensure that eligible citizens can exercise their voting rights.
