Kolkata Durga Puja Pandal Stampede: Death Toll Reaches 19

A festive evening turned into a nightmare in Kolkata after a stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in North Kolkata killed at least 19 people and injured around 25 others on October 17, 2026. The incident occurred amid heavy rain and a sudden surge of people near the pandal’s exit.

According to reports, large crowds gathered at the venue as visitors sought shelter from the rain. The rush reportedly intensified around the entrance and exit areas, where narrow passages and confusion over crowd movement may have contributed to the tragedy. Eyewitnesses raised concerns about inadequate lighting and crowd-control arrangements. However, the precise sequence of events and responsibility for any safety lapses remain under investigation.

The tragedy has raised serious questions about safety at major public celebrations. Kolkata hosts thousands of Durga Puja pandals, attracting enormous crowds every year. Organisers and authorities must ensure adequate entry and exit routes, trained security personnel, emergency medical assistance and plans for sudden weather changes. A celebration should never become a situation where people struggle to escape danger.

Police have arrested seven people, including members of the organising committee and personnel involved in crowd management, while additional individuals were detained for questioning. A special investigation team has been announced to examine the incident and establish whether negligence contributed to the deaths.

The central question is no longer simply how the tragedy happened, but whether the necessary safety measures were in place. Accountability must be based on evidence, and any confirmed negligence should have consequences. Most importantly, lessons from this disaster must lead to stronger safety standards so that families can attend public festivals without fearing for their lives.

A festival should bring people together—not turn a celebration into a tragedy.
